Natasha Fernandes (b. 2001), born and raised in Doha, a graphic designer and VCUarts Qatar graduate, presents "Store-away," an exploration of the fading visual heritage of early expatriates in Qatar’s diasporic communities. Focused on early storefront signage, it addresses the notable absence of the portrayal of these communities within Qatar’s historical narrative.

It captures storefront visuals often overlooked and perceived as ‘rudimentary’ or ‘amateur’ before undergoing rapid urbanization and modernization pressures. “Store-away” celebrates the disappearing design that once nurtured a sense of identity and belonging to a foreign land.

The installation mimics the vibrancy of communities through lightboxes. "Store-away," strategically positioned in the corner of Liwan, subtly mirrors how this culture has been gradually hidden from view, emphasizing its importance despite its understated presence.

“Store-away” encourages viewers to consider the valuable contributions of expatriate communities to Qatar's history and to recognize the importance of preserving their cultural heritage and visual legacy.

Thank you to Doha News for covering Store-Away with an insightful article and video. It was an absolute honour!
